Our History
Central Arts Players (CAP) opened its doors in 1964 with a production of Brigadoon. The group was formed as a venue for musical theater, showcasing the talents of the world renowned Central United Methodist Church Sanctuary Choir. The success of CAP’s productions led to its expansion which included members of the community outside the Church and a full spectrum of theater arts offerings.
Since it’s founding, CAP has produced over 50 full scale productions which have helped it to achieve a reputation for a high standard of excellence. Former governor Jack Williams was quoted as saying, “If you want to spend a wonderful weekend, go to see a Central Arts Players production!” In 2000, The Mesa Tribune bestowed outstanding accolades on CAP for its production of Mame. CAP was recently reviewed and described as “the best kept secret in the Valley for premier entertainment”.
CAP’s use of local talent throughout the years has brought significant expertise to our productions: Phoenix arts mentor, Don Morse, has served as Executive Producer for the past 20 years. Joanne Yeoman of Arizona State University has acted as mentor and advisor; Sarah Rice went on to star with Angela Lansbury in the original Broadway production of Sweeney Todd and Bobby Harris toured with Carol Channing in Hello Dolly!
CAP’s current transformation ushers us into its largest undertaking and most exciting step in its evolution – a full production season including opportunities intended to develop and nurture stagecraft and performance skills. Located in the heart of the Phoenix Arts District, we proudly present Central Community Theater.
